Find out how to choose the best tennis racket for you. Whether you are looking for the best beginner tennis racquet or a racquet that gives you the perfect combination of power, spin and control, let Wilson be your guide to finding the perfect tennis racquet for every type of player.
Our job is to make a better tennis racket for each of them. We offer four key racquet lines that each focus on a specific performance advantage – precision, feel, power and control. Once a player knows what edge they are looking for in a better tennis racket , we have different weights and sieve sizes that provide an added level of customization for any type of player.
Players who are learning tennis for the first time should start with a better, lightweight tennis racquet that has a larger head, often referred to as an “oversized” racquet. This will help them make contact with the ball consistently while learning to rally without straining their arm as their muscles adjust to the game.
When choosing a best tennis racket for a beginner, here are a few things to look for:
- Oversized head circumference
- Lighter frame
- More power
INTERMEDIATE TENNIS PLAYERS
Intermediate players can start to reduce their head size and add a little more weight to their best tennis racquet as their tennis muscles develop and they learn to generate more rhythm by themselves – same. Doing both of these things will allow them to keep their newfound power in check.
When choosing a best tennis racket for intermediate tennis players, keep the following points in mind:
- Oversized or Midplus head circumference
- Mid-weight frame
- Less power generated by the racquet, more control
ADVANCED TENNIS PLAYERS
Advanced players should use “mid-size” racquets that allow them to play with control, feel and precision. These three perks will provide a more connected feel to the ball, allowing players to play with more confidence as they shoot.
When choosing a best tennis racket for advanced tennis players, keep the following points in mind:
- Headband Midplus to Midsize
- Medium to heavy weight frame
- Racquets optimized for control and feel, such as Blade or Pro Staff.
CHOOSING A RACKET FOR YOUR SWING STYLE
players who play with short or flat swings generally prefer their rackets to generate power. for this style of swing, beginner or intermediate players should go for the best tennis racket while more advanced players should go for a pro staff.
players who play with more modern vertical swings generally want their racquets to generate more control and feel. beginners or intermediate players should start with clash while advanced players will feel more confident with blade.
TENNIS RACKET
CONSTRUCTION
when choosing a best tennis racquet, three things affect power and control: size, weight and string pattern.
- bigger head size = more power; smaller head circumference = more control
- lighter racket = more power; heavier racket = more control
- open string bed = more power; denser string bed = more control
RACKET STRING
beginner to intermediate players, seniors or those who suffer from tennis elbow should play with multifilament string while advanced players can try their hand at polyester string.
players typically need to don a 53-55lb multifilament (synthetic gut) to start, and then adjust from there. higher voltage = more control, while lower voltage = more power.
in case of hybrid string (half poly / half multi), thread the 2lb polyester under the multifilament. as a general rule, you should avoid polyester ropes over 54 lbs, as it is already a very stiff material.

RACKET GRIP SIZES
Racquet grip sizes are measured from 0 to 5, or in the US, from 4 (0) to 4 5/8. Most adult women are successful with a 4 ¼ (grip size 2) while men typically gravitate towards 4 3/8 (grip size 3).
However, recent trends have seen players use smaller grip sizes to generate more spin.
If you are not sure which grip size is best for you, it is always better to go with a smaller grip, as you can use an overgrip to increase the thickness of the grip.
